Some excellent Carboniferous plant fossils can be found at Anstruther if you can find the right type of rock and if you have the strength and determination to break them open and carry them off the beach.

Location Information

Plant fossils from Anstruther can be observed in various places, weathering out of the sandstone layers that are exposed at low tide. Pebbles containing many fossil bivalves can also be picked up but the real prizes are the excellently preserved plant fossils that can be collected by locating the right type of rocks and splitting them.

(Suitable for children)

The fossil hunting area at Anstruther is near to the town and does not require a long walk to access it. There is a sandy beach that children will like and the areas where fossils are found are fairly easily navigated. In places large outcrops of rock and boulders must be crossed but there is a path above the beach that can be taken if these prove too difficult.

 

At anstruther, the areas where fossils are found are all located within a few minutes walk from where cars are parked. The beach is easily accessed at various points but is mostly covered at high tide.

Foreshore

The sandstone layers at Anstruther exposed on the foreshore at low tide contain various woody fossils, while some of the cobbles on the beach contain fossil bivalves. One particular type of rock found on the beach, when split, can reveal very good quality plant fossils.

This is a fairly safe location with the main hazards present being the risk of slipping on seaweed covered rocks and that of flying pieces of rock produced by splitting cobbles. Safety specs are a must!

This is an excellent location for plant remains, but you could also try Little Haven, Nelton Haven in wales, Writhlington in Avon or Whitehaven in Cumbria, Offerton in Cheshire, Besom Hill in Lancashire or New Hay Quarry in Lancashire which is very similar or try Jurassic plant remains from Yorkshire, Scalby Ness, Hayburn Wyke, Filey, Cloughton Wyke and Gristhorpe Bay. In Scotland, you can also try Crail or East Wemyss.


At Anstruther, look on the surface of the rock layers.


Stone Tumblers are used for tumbling and polishing rough rock, stones and pebbles including those found on the beach and glass.

Whilst collecting fossils, on those days where you come back empty handed, you could collect rocks, stones and glass from the beach and tumble then at home.

These are all high quality machines to give a professional finish to your samples. The tumblers can be used with a variety of grits, most commonly Silicon Carbide Grit and Cerium Oxide. We have a wide range of rough rocks for sale too.

Microfossils are much easier to collect because they are so small that the vast majority of collections only concentrate on large finds. These small finds can simply be found by taking small samples of sands, crags, clays and soft rocks and examining them under a microscope.
